Now we can find out what really happened that day…

In a move that is shaking up the political landscape, House Speaker Mike Johnson announced on Friday his intent to release a staggering 44,000 hours of footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This decision aligns with promises he made to the far-right faction of his party during his campaign for the speakership.

Johnson’s action is poised to unveil a new layer of transparency over the events of that day, as he remarked, “This decision will allow Americans and various stakeholders to witness firsthand what transpired, rather than depending on the narrative constructed by a select few government officials.”

The initial release includes around 90 hours of security footage on a public committee website, with plans to gradually unveil the remaining footage over the coming months. Furthermore, a public viewing room will be established in the Capitol, enhancing accessibility to these crucial moments in American history.

Previously, the GOP-led House Administration Committee permitted limited access to this footage for media, legal parties, and select individuals. The videos offer a visceral perspective of the chaos and violence, as supporters of then-President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, clashing with law enforcement and breaching security barriers.

Johnson’s move is a direct fulfillment of commitments made to influential conservative members like Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. Both Gaetz and Trump, who faces federal charges related to the Jan. 6 events and is currently campaigning for reelection, have publicly commended Johnson’s decision. Trump, via Truth Social, praised Johnson for his “courage and fortitude.”

However, this extensive public release of sensitive security footage has sparked concerns about potential risks to the safety of Capitol staff and members. The footage not only showcases the brutal assault on Capitol Police but also reveals strategic building access points and emergency escape routes. In response, Johnson assured that measures are being taken to blur faces in the footage to prevent retaliatory actions, adding that a small portion containing sensitive security details will remain undisclosed.

This release marks a significant shift from previous handling of the footage. Earlier this year, then-Speaker McCarthy faced criticism for granting exclusive access to the footage to then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson’s presentation of the material was seen by many as an attempt to skew the public’s perception of the events, aligning with a broader Republican effort to reshape the narrative around the insurrection.

The House Jan. 6 committee, comprising seven Democrats and two Republicans, had previously documented how Trump incited his followers to march on the Capitol to overturn his electoral defeat. Their final report accused Trump of a “multi-part conspiracy” to subvert the 2020 presidential election results. Following their recommendations, Trump was indicted on several felony charges related to the attack.

As this extensive archive of Jan. 6 footage becomes public, it is expected to further polarize an already divided nation, with implications that could reverberate through the upcoming electoral cycles and beyond.

  1. Our country has become polarized by lies, innuendos, cover ups and more by both political parties. This is a very tiny step in the right direction. The American people have a right to know the fact presented in a balanced way, not just about this but across the board. Let the citizens make their own judgements.

The politicians have long forgotten the role they play in America. The Constitution makes it clear, the president and members of Congress are “the servants” to the American people. The politicians, particularly many on the left, have embraced the view that the citizens serve them, as they do what they wish to hold power, get rich and generally abuse all Americans.

Because of them, the Democratic politicians, our borders are wide open. The majority of Americans want our sovereignty secured. And the FBI? It is no longer an honorable law enforcement arm serving the people, it has become the descended step child of the WWII Nazi Brown Shirts and owes its allegiance to the powerful politician left.
