Derek Chauvin Stabbed in Prison by Inmate

Derek Chauvin and George Floyd

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted for the murder of George Floyd, was stabbed and seriously injured in a federal prison in Arizona. The incident occurred at the Federal Correctional Institution, Tucson, a medium-security facility known for its security lapses and staffing shortages. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the assault happened at around 12:30 p.m. local time on Friday, but did not disclose the identity of the inmate involved.

The attack on Chauvin is not the first high-profile incident in federal prisons in recent months. In July, Larry Nassar, a disgraced sports doctor, was also attacked by an inmate in Florida. Furthermore, this is the second major incident at FCI Tucson in just over a year, following an attempted shooting by an inmate in November 2022.

Chauvin, 47, was transferred to FCI Tucson in August 2022 to serve a 21-year federal sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights and a concurrent 22½-year state sentence for second-degree murder. His lawyer had previously advocated for Chauvin to be kept out of general population, anticipating he would be a target. In Minnesota, he was mainly held in solitary confinement for his protection.

This latest incident adds to the ongoing scrutiny faced by the federal Bureau of Prisons, especially after the jail suicide of financier Jeffrey Epstein in 2019 and the recent stabbing of Ted Kaczynski. An AP investigation has revealed significant flaws within the Bureau of Prisons, including sexual abuse, violence, escapes, and staffing issues. Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters, appointed last year to reform the agency, has faced criticism for not being transparent with lawmakers and for the continuing issues under her leadership.

The FBI has been notified of the stabbing, and visits to FCI Tucson have been suspended. This is a developing story, and more details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.

  1. I certainly don’t think Chauvin rec’d a fair trial with the tons of over hyped press 24/7. The press, as usual, convicted him long before there was any evidence disclosed to the public. But what the heck, isn’t that what the lame stream media always does?

  2. Worst case of unfair justice ever. The man was only holding down the individual and yes I do believe he was on drugs that caused his death. But it is so political it won’t result in a fair trail ever.
Granted it should not have had an ending like a death but it could have been the Cop as well dead.
Really an unfair trial, but you will never hear anything else about it.

  3. One of the greatest injustice tragedies of all time. It is responsible for the inability of cities to hire police and the inner city cockroaches that think this is justice deserve what they get.
