AOC Crosses the Line with Her Latest Assault on the Supreme Court

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Democratic “Squad” member Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., voiced her discontent with the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent decisions, criticizing what she deemed an “abuse of power.” Ocasio-Cortez called for impeachment and subpoenas as measures to curtail the justices’ authority, sparking controversy with her remarks.

“The Supreme Court is exceeding its boundaries,” Ocasio-Cortez asserted during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

She added, “And I genuinely believe we need to have discussions about judicial review as a means to check the courts as well.”

The Supreme Court issued its final rulings of the term, which included rejecting the consideration of race in admissions, ruling in favor of a Christian web designer who declined to create same-sex wedding websites, and striking down President Biden’s plan to cancel student loan debt. Democrats perceived these decisions as direct assaults on the left, accusing the court of being “illegitimate.”

“These rulings indicate a troubling drift toward authoritarianism and consolidation of power within the courts,” Ocasio-Cortez warned on Sunday. “In fact, even members of the court, like Justice Elena Kagan, have acknowledged that the court is starting to assume legislative powers.”

Ocasio-Cortez has consistently advocated for court-packing and limiting the court’s authority, even suggesting subpoenas and impeachment as possible actions. Speaking to CNN’s Dana Bash, she said, “If Chief Justice Roberts refuses to appear voluntarily for an investigation, then we should seriously consider issuing subpoenas.”

She continued, “We must establish more stringent and binding ethical guidelines to address instances where Supreme Court justices potentially violate the law, as we witnessed with Clarence Thomas’ refusal to recuse himself from cases involving his wife and the events of January 6th.”

“Impeachment should also be on the table. We possess various tools to address misconduct, overreach, and abuse of power, yet the Supreme Court has not received the necessary oversight to maintain its legitimacy,” she insisted. “Moreover, in the process, they themselves have eroded the court’s legitimacy, posing a grave threat to our democracy.”

President Biden, in contrast to Ocasio-Cortez, recently clarified his opposition to expanding the court during an interview on MSNBC. Biden expressed concerns that progressive efforts to enlarge the Supreme Court would “permanently politicize it in an unhealthy manner.”

He added optimistically, “I think, look, I believe some members of the court are starting to recognize that their legitimacy is being questioned in unprecedented ways.”

However, following the Supreme Court’s affirmative action ruling, Ocasio-Cortez made headlines by suggesting that the court did not take its “absurd ‘colorblindness’ claims” seriously, alleging that it should have “eliminated” legacy admissions.

Ocasio-Cortez took to Twitter to share her thoughts on the ruling, pointing out that “70% of Harvard’s legacy applicants are white” and criticizing the court for not addressing the issue. This led many social media users to criticize the congresswoman, highlighting that the matter of legacy admissions was not before the court.
